Photoshop shows the way

photo (307)

Completed painting

I’m learning Photoshop skills, very slowly! I had a wonderful book for a Christmas gift from my brother and this resulted in a lightbulb moment…..
I had got ‘stuck’ with a painting – I knew it wasn’t right, but what I didn’t know is where to take it next and how to complete it.. I knew that the background was wrong, that the lighting seemed uneven… all in all I just was not happy

Unfinished....

Unfinished….

My start point was  a background that had already been repainted four times.. I exmerimented with the image in pgotoshop and found the right colour… then it was simply just a job of painting in the right colour and adjustingv the lighting….. Finally completed!

My second experiment I took my original reference photograph and worked it in Photoshop with a number of other layers. I created the image exactly how I wanted to paint it, then ran to the studio to get cracking… As I worked, the painting and my ideas evolved as I changed the shadows and added silver leaf….

The below images show this process….

Now I can almost use Photoshop, I’m not intending to bypass my sketchbook every time, it was just that the computer manipulation gave me the chance to be brave at the click of a button!

Thanks for joining me!

The Donkey Sanctuary

5 x 7″ – 13 x 18 cm approx

sketchbook work from life

available – £10 plus P&P

 14th July, 2011

After yesterday’s mammoth effort, I sidled off to The Great Yorkshire Show today, I didn’t forget my duties though, this is a sketch from life of the two donkeys at ‘The Donkey Sanctuary’ stand….

So, what else was I up to? I hear you ask…… I did 1116 photos, and have now had chance to download, crop and faff in general, and have some smashing new material to paint….

I’ve enclosed a few below to show you that I’ve been ‘on the ball’ all day! I hope you enjoy this brief selection….

I’m  now wanting to start painting my new reference material, but I’ve still a number of my ‘100’ paintings that are spoken for… a fab jack Russel, a young golden lab pup, a gorgeous pony sadly put down after a road traffic accident, I need to keep my creativity in line and attend to the images I was on track with before I gathered my new inspiration that will have to wait- also, I don’t want to have to half-kill myself to get this new stuff done in one-day sessions!!!

 13th July, 2011

On 11th July I wrote………” I have a lot to thank Facebook for…. while late night networking, finding other people who were equestrian artists, I came across a lovely lady called XXX, she works BIG, and I mean BIG….. we made friends and chatted a while. I always feel that time is my constraint to size of painting during my 100 day challenge… she convinced me that I just needed more ‘gusto’ and much bigger brushes….  for day 73 I am doing it large!

As preparation I’ve done a pen and ink drawing (DAY 71) two compositional colour studies (DAY 72) and today I’ve completed my intention of a large painting of the same image…… After 7 hours slog in the studio, I’m delighted with the end result, and rather exhausted and cross eyed.

pen drawing day 71

Usually, I don’t put this much effort into preparatory work (…WHAT???? I hear my students gasp… “But you make us do it!”….)  What I have found is that by the time I drew up my final piece, I had an established image in my head to work to, rather than the ‘suck it and see’ method which I lazily often rely on. I’m sure that this extra effort has made a better painting and I shall endeavour to keep up to this for my larger pieces.

I’m having a day off painting tomorrow to go to The Great Yorkshire Show and collect some more reference photographs for painting. I’m so hoping it’s a sunny day as I now have the need for blue shadows on grey horses……. it’s a must!!

12th July 2011

Tuesday’s are by busy ‘run around with the little one’ day…. so it looks like I’ve done tons of work here with part 1 and 2 shown above…. but I’ve not!…….

I have taken day 71’s laboriously worked pen and ink drawing and simply played with composition on the inhouse photocopier, then hand coloured the resulting prints. I felt I needed to consider different composition ideas… how tight to crop the image or how loosely to leave it. Rather than complete over 6 hours tedious (but enjoyable) line work, I have used a shortcut, one that I often recommend to my art students, which is to create copies of the original to play with en-route to the final piece, which will be a BIG CANVAS that I shall spend tomorrow working on….

I always find it surprising how different the same original piece can look by changing its composition…. I prefer the second image, the tightness of the crop adds more energy and dynamic. So today’s two hours in the studio has given me the result I wanted; to know how I want to draw out tomorrow’s piece…..rather than discovering after a few hours work that I wished I’d thought about it more and changed the composition…..

Saying that, I still may change my mind and change it yet again……..

I have a lot to thank Facebook for…. while late night networking, finding other people who were equestrian artists, I came across a lovely lady called (SHE HAS ASKED FOR HER NAME TO BE REMOVED ), she works BIG, and I mean BIG….. we made friends and chatted a while. I always feel that time is my constraint to size of painting during my 100 day challenge… she convinced me that I just needed more ‘gusto’ and much bigger brushes….  for day 73 I am doing it large!!! The cards are on the table and I’m taking it on…… This photo reference has been borrowed from her photo album, I browsed through and got stuck at this image… the old hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I thought ‘if only I could paint this….’

I asked, and permission was granted… YAY!!!

This pen and ink is a working piece, by working, I mean its en route to the thinking and planning I need to do before launching on a BIG thing… I know now that I need to crop this image to a square to rework it, that I need heightened colour, that I need to ‘get out of my neat little accurate comfort zone’ and spread my artistic wings a little…. That I will teeter on the brink and have that wonderful nervousness of ‘will it won’t it’ going on….. It scares me a little, but this is what I want and need to make me a better artist… I need to jump into a bit of a challenge, or I shall ever rely on safe and nice for ever… those of you that know me personally know that I’m not Ms safe and nice… nice maybe, but not safe….

it’s about time I stepped  it up and pushed it a little…….

Joe

10th July, 2011

Here’s Joe, sadly he is not with us anymore……. I’ve been invited to include Joe in my 100 challenge by Hazel, a facebook friend. Joe was a big, honest gelding, he sounded like the trustworthy sort of horse that is hard to find. I really warmed to this horse after hearing what Hazel said about him, and I am more than happy to keep her treasured memories alive by creating this little painting……. The photographs she gave me had a low resolution and provided hardly any detail, so with a quick bit of photoshop fiddling and cropping, I managed to enhance the image into something I could really get my teeth into.

I have again created a monochrome underpainting and used a number of glazes to build the colour and depth; this has been a little trickier than my day 69 painting, Aimee, which used the same technique, this was due to the differing absorbancy of the dalerboard and canvas board grounds that I used…..

The sun has shone, the breeze has wafted through the studio and I’ve had fun!!! This lovely mare has such a kind eye and a shiny dappled coat, she’s been a joy to paint today……. The reference photograph has again been donated for my 100 challenge by Laura Joy, another facebook friend. This mare has a special bond with Laura, I hope I’ve captured her kind temperament and generous outlook……

I’ve used a series of glazes to steadily build the colour, each one like a thin veil of paint. I love working with this technique as I have real control over the depth…. I’ve been broadening my colour palette also; usually I just stick to my trusty burnt sienna… today I’ve added quinacridone burnt orange into the mix ( I use Liquitex brand of acrylics) and this has given me a brightness and warmth of colour to create Aimee’s coat.

8th July, 2011

It’s been a fun day in the studio with the junior artist, or ‘the spotty one’ to give her her new title… I think it is chicken pox, but in true style it hasn’t stopped her rattling out 3 pieces of work to my one!

Today’s drawing is of a part bred Welsh show pony yearling, Mr Bubbles…. Knockagar Re-Plan to give him his show name. I was donated this image for my 100 challenge by Angela Flack, a Facebook friend. Isn’t this youngster fabulous? I just love his colour and thought that coloured pencil would be the best medium to use to bring out his delicate frame and unusual colouring…..

7th July, 2011

A facebook friend, Karen, sent me this lovely photograph by the photographer Dave Warren. She’d asked for permission for me to paint it, and Dave generously agreed.

When I first saw the photo, I was struck by the beauty of the light and atmosphere, how Karen’s shire almost glowed with his orange highlights…… I knew that this painting would be quite an undertaking to complete in a day, but felt as I had a 3 hour demonstration slot booked at Holmfirth Art Week, and a clear afternoon to get it kicked off in the studio beforehand, that I would have plenty of time to complete…

How wrong could I be!

Early afternoon, my daughters nursery rang to say she had a suspicious rash….possibly chicken pox…. I’d only just started to get my paints out, so everything stopped and I dashed off to collect ‘the spotty one’…. After a near 2 hour wait at the doctors to be told it was either the pox or flea bites (???- I look at the cat, dog and 4 hens, none of which are scratching…) I dashed home with barely an hour to settle her, pack the car and dash off for the hour drive to my demonstration venue!

demonstration in progress

The idea of the demo was that I would show my acrylic painting techniques to any member of the public who wondered by…. fine in theory, but by now I needed to get my head down and paint at speed! Needless to say I couldn’t help but be chatty and the painting didn’t get finished. I arrived home at 10pm and went straight to the studio for another final hour….. I think it was worth it!….

This is a little colour experiment…. I was inspired by a picture I saw on the internet, and tried to recreate it to use as painting reference with my own camera and a friends horse… the end photo wasn’t exactly what I had hoped, so I changed it still further by playing about in photoshop…. this end painting has pushed this process yet further by adding stronger accent colours…..
