RESERVED FOR OWNERS VIEWING

I was asked to have a look at this horses photograph with a view to paint her for this challenge… my first thoughts were about what an expressive eye she had, then I drank in the purple, burgundy, lilac, orange and peach, I instantly knew I had to paint her…

The headcollar was a patterned blue nylon so I substituted for a leather look, removed the lead rope and allowed the lovely linen finish of the canvas to become a very quiet and simple background…..

Tonight has been ‘Art Club Demonstration’ night, and I popped along to Dinnington Art Club near Rotherham, South Yorks, for a quick spot of horse in acrylics…

My last demonstration at this club I completed a detailed portrait of a wee Pekingese dog owned by one of the audience. Tonight I had been asked to paint a horse in acrylics, and I knew the one I wanted to work on!

I’d come across a photo quite recently of a lovely grey Arabian stallion, all arched neck and flying mane – he would make an eye catching painting and also a chance to draw the basics with a few sweeping lines, to increase the colour in shadow and to use a loose technique with little detail – 2 hours goes very fast when you are sat at an easel with an audience asking questions!

This Art Group has a very professional set up – camera trained on my painting and projected onto a cinema wall! So I was viewing my own work at about 8 foot tall!

Upon completing the painting and returning home, I wondered if I should refine some areas of the painting, but upon reflection, I decided that I would only fiddle and may spoil some of that energy and flow within the painting…..

I have invited people to send in photos of their own bay or grey horses to give both Roxanne and myself some new inspiration to work from… This lovely chap in the painting, Quest, was one of the images sent in by his owner.

I’m sure that Roxanne will agree with me when I say you know within seconds of seeing an image, whether it is something you would like to work from…. I’d say I chose this image within 3 seconds, drawn to the heightened colour and the possibility of working broader and looser with the brush, AND it has my most favourite colour combinations of purple / orange / blue colour mixes. I’ve really enjoyed a quiet studio day creating this gorgeous horses portrait, and I’m delighted to report that his owner loves the result and the painting is now sold.

If you want your horses to be our artists muse, email images to the below email address and we will give careful consideration to all submitted – no obligation to purchase if we paint from your image, but you will be offered first refusal on the artwork before it is offered to public sale……

Calm Before The Storm

Calm Before The Storm

9th August 2013

11.75 x 8.25″ – 30 x 21cm approx

Artist E J Lazenby

It’s all about colour and light… A young event horse quietly and very calmly waiting his turn in the arena, closing his eyes against the brightness of the sun yet still remaining in soft submission to his rider, his ears constantly flicking – drinking in the sounds and the hustle and bustle around him… the sort of horse I’d like to be sat on rather than the highly strung creatures upset by a five minute wait…. The moment in time that my camera captured a number of photographs of this lovely animal led to the title ‘Calm Before The Storm’, as he then blitzed his way around the show jumping arena, jumping clear, then produced a 0-60 mph gallop, impressing the judges to lie a very respectable third in the 5 year old division…..

I was inspired to paint this piece when I visited Bramham International Horse Trials earlier this year and took a number of reference photographs. I’m enjoying finding my compositions by cropping my photographs tighter and tighter. This horse was in fact a beautifully marked skewbald (brown and white patches), but so I could squeeze him into this painting challenge, I creatively altered his base colour!

Lead Four

7 x 11″ – 18 x 28 cm approx

Black Onxy pencil on white heavyweight cartridge paper

available £45 plus P&P

 17th July, 2011

This is the first study from my new Lorenzo photos from last thursday….. I took 3 hours tonight to create this drawing after a busy day with the junior artist at Wortley Country Festival…… I’m a little worn out now… I needed more time to really make this drawing tonally accurate, but it’s given me the grey horse bug now, and it will be hard to steer away from becoming a Lorenzo horse obsessive…. (arn’t ladies meant to become Lorenzo obsessives and ignore his horses?…)

The photo is under electric lights, so I will retake one tomorrow in decent daylight so that the tonal values are more correct to those of the original…..

Nipper

7.5 x 11.5″ – 19 x 29 cm approx

Atelier Interactive acrylics on dalerboard

reserved until further notice

 16th July, 2011

This is Nipper. I don’t know the full story about this lovely little pony, but after looking through his owner’s photo albums, I see a pony full of fun and energy, a sparky and loving character, an excellent show jumper and a pony, obviously adored by his young owner Jodie.

Nipper was put down recently after injuries sustained in a road traffic accident…….

Jodie asked for something a little misty, possibly with Nipper running in a field full of grass in horse heaven…..
There’s no grass in my painting, but I hope the swirls of mist around this adorable pony are in keeping with his owners ideas, and that my little painting will keep the memories fresh….

The BIG commission…

Whilst busily working on my 100 day challenge, I’ve also been quietly working on my commissions…..

The latest of which had a few faltering starts……

It’s top secret, which often does not bode well for obtaining the best photographs available! I’ve had to take a photo of two provided photos with my zoom lens, just to get enough detail to work with… the third photo was acquired via two MMS photo to phone transfers, over a 3 week timescale, put through Photoshop and still then, provided me with only the bare essentials of the animal…. I’d waited and waited to receive the full set of photos, and with the deadline getting close, we had to just bite the bullet and get on with it…….

first session

I’ve had to be a bit ‘stop and start’ juggling my studio time around my little one, teaching time and 100 challenge painting time. I ended up with an 8 day deadline, rather uncomfortable for a painting of this size (36″ x 16″) and complexity….

session 2

Maybe I should explain my studio equipment… the towel is my ‘brush wipe’ so I don’t add too much water to my colour mixes after washing my brush… the ceramic plate is my palette of choice; smooth, solid, white and easy clean (the most important bit!) the dog, labradoodle Tessa, often lays and watches with the occasional nose dab….

I have been able to work a couple of hours most days, and the three stallions started to take shape… I had different lighting effects in each photograph, so had to try and balance the directional light source so each individual had a similar highlight and shadow pattern….

third session

fourth session

A day before the urgent deadline I managed to complete the painting… phew….. It is due to be presented to the horse’s breeder over this weekend, and I await feedback with anticipation… I hope that she loves my painting of her 3 ‘boys’….. Rembrandt, Maximillion 381 and Dubloon……
