Rally the Troops

23rd August 2013

9 x 12″ approx

Coloured pencil on grey Canson paper

£70 plus P&P

Artist E J Lazenby

After 7 hours filming in Liverpool and a 6 hour round trip by rail, I’ve steadily created this study of the re-enactment group ‘Slipped Knott’…. I took a number of reference photographs last month at Wentworth Castle Gardens, and I’ve been harbouring the intention to paint some when time permitted……

Today has been confined to drawing media due to the confinement of the train journeys, but as I have been quietly absorbed entertaining my fellow passengers, the hours have flown by and this pencil study shall emerge shortly as a full colour painting – I’ve taken out more soldiers, changed the colour of the horse, restructured the background and generally given it a good shake up from the image in the reference photo….

19th August 2013

oils on canvas panel

SOLD (DG)

Artist E J Lazenby

This oil on canvas panel is painted from life, it shows our little mare, Clivocast Shelby, who is sadly leaving us this week and going back to her owner as we have lost our grazing. I’m sad to see her go, so this painting I did for her… She is such a bright eyed little poser and will stand at the gate for hours in the hope of a treat!

It was a simple job to take the easel and paints up to the field and work loosely keeping the colour palette cool blues and greys… I brought the painting home after 2 hours as the flies started to stick to the paint (now tweezered off) and added a few more darks and details from memory….

The reason of painting from life today is an interesting one………. My blog received a comment a couple of days ago that got me thinking…. Do I copy photos, do I change the photos enough (backgrounds, colours, combine 3 or 4 together…?) Am I guilty of being only a copyist? Why do I work in a Traditional and figurative way? ( I did do a series of more abstract works as a student and then later in my 20’s), Is my work too safe and boring???

The comment is as follows…..   ” Great work, I really feel that you should expand your horizons beyond copying. I see so many wonderfully skilled artists such as yourself, whose creativity is limited by the habit of copying and commissions. Don’t be afraid to try something new.”

To an artist that has done a 4 year degree and then 20 years self employed as a professional painter, what ‘new’ things are left???

(I’ve done abstract, expressionist, gestural, automatic, impressionistic, colourist, mediums of pencil, charcoal, ink, pen, acrylic, watercolour, oils, coloured pencil, 2d paintings and 3d sculpture, mono / etching / collographs….)

I suppose there is conceptual art (which I hate and find most of it pretentious rubbish)

There’s performance art (errrr, no thanks, coming from Barnsley I see ‘performance’ art on every street corner on a Saturday night)

So what’s left?

Me

I don’t have the need to be new or innovative, I’m just me……

So here I am, doing what I love doing, in a style which I have found over 25 years of painting suits me perfectly, working from life, memory AND photograph….. Mainly painting horses, but happy painting nudes, dogs, cats, wildlife, landscapes, portraits….

I like things to look in proportion and have correct form – elongated and deformed horses don’t float my boat under the name of ‘stylised’ or ‘modern’… to me they are just badly painted…Rant over!

These remarks are not aimed at anybody, but I feel a little more justified doing what I do and being happy within my own rules…..

The bright sun is creating a mirror like gleam on this bay horses glossy coat… I love the way that the highlight swirls and dances over his shoulders and hips… The wind ruffles his mane but he never lifts his head from the sweet tasting grass……

I’ve tried to paint this piece quite broadly, the wet paint is still shining in the above photograph, I’m being more immediate and decisive with my colour mixes and my application of the paint on the canvas.

We are now half way through the painting challenge, my, how time has flown….Can I let you into a conversation I had with Roxanne this morning?

RG/ “Hmm, I think I’m getting obsessed with painting. Words cannot describe how much I enjoy it! Every one I do is a challenge!”

JL/  “It’s ace isn’t it? I was dreaming new paintings last night! “

RG/ “Its a wonderful feeling 🙂 x”

When you can immerse yourself in creativity, imagination and inspiration, have the motivation and mentality to keep on going despite what else is happening around you, to have what you create admired and adored by others….. this must be what we could call a ‘Dream Job’…..?

The ground vibrated with the thud of hooves, the wind whipped long black manes as the horses tossed their heads, cold steel flashed in the bright sun as their kind eyes looked on expectantly …..

No, this wasn’t a war re-enactment scene, far from it… the Dales stallions were in the collecting ring in preparation for their appearance in the ridden class at The Great Yorkshire Show….

I’ve used a close crop for my composition today to bring us closer to that fine head and heavy mane……

This horse has always caught my eye – the heavy blue shadows, the purple tints, the luscious dapples….

I asked over 6 months ago if I could paint him from his old owners Facebook profile pic – she agreed, then I quietly waited and bided my time until today. I do love a Highland and I’m a total sucker for curvy dappled bottoms and necks!

This painting sold earlier today on the viewing of the ‘first draft’, I’m hoping with fingers crossed that this now completed study has captured ‘Rory’ at his best!

It’s all about colour and light for me yet again!

Now I’m very lucky, I have friends that own some really beautiful horses…. what’s more, these friends in blazing sun, will chase aforementioned beautiful horse up and down a dusty sweaty field for an hour and a half just so I can satisfy my need for galloping, posing and just downright gratuitously gorgeous photos to satisfy my exact needs as an artist…..

Deb Howe – this one’s for you – the seriously handsome Boris…..

All that running around in the dust was worth it in the end eh honey?????

New work, April 2012

Slashes of gold shear into the moody sky,

as the shadowy horses gallop by……

I think I must be feeling a little poetic tonight! I’ve been busy in the studio having some experimental fun with my new gold atelier interactive metallic paint… it’s not as good as gold leaf I think, but it is rather nice to smear around with my fingers and make a total mess of my door handles around the home…..

I have the Open Studio event approaching in May, and I’m wanting to create a series of small affordable originals to entice possible buyers…..!! None of us have the money to buy big pieces at the moment, so I have decided to think small and to let some creativity flow.

Getting messy

number 1- 6x8"

number 2- 12 x 16"

number 3 -10 x 12"

number 4- 10 x 12"

I’m not sure which one is my favourite as yet, nor am I settled on titles.. I’m going to let them come to me over night then I may re-blog tomorrow…. I still have a tendency to over work experimental pieces, looking back, I really enjoy some of the stages these pieces go through, and maybe I should be a little braver and stop sooner???

just starting

another beginning

It would be interesting to know what you think about stopping sooner…. could be a totally new departure for my work! As for title suggestions… all welcomed! All the above pieces are for sale, please email me for further details (arrkidd@yahoo.co.uk)

Thanks for your interest.. talk soon xx

The Donkey Sanctuary

5 x 7″ – 13 x 18 cm approx

sketchbook work from life

available – £10 plus P&P

 14th July, 2011

After yesterday’s mammoth effort, I sidled off to The Great Yorkshire Show today, I didn’t forget my duties though, this is a sketch from life of the two donkeys at ‘The Donkey Sanctuary’ stand….

So, what else was I up to? I hear you ask…… I did 1116 photos, and have now had chance to download, crop and faff in general, and have some smashing new material to paint….

I’ve enclosed a few below to show you that I’ve been ‘on the ball’ all day! I hope you enjoy this brief selection….

I’m  now wanting to start painting my new reference material, but I’ve still a number of my ‘100’ paintings that are spoken for… a fab jack Russel, a young golden lab pup, a gorgeous pony sadly put down after a road traffic accident, I need to keep my creativity in line and attend to the images I was on track with before I gathered my new inspiration that will have to wait- also, I don’t want to have to half-kill myself to get this new stuff done in one-day sessions!!!

Swing IV
24 x 24 ” – 60 x 60 cm approx
Acrylic on canvas panel

available – but you may have to arm wrestle me for it….

 13th July, 2011

On 11th July I wrote………” I have a lot to thank Facebook for…. while late night networking, finding other people who were equestrian artists, I came across a lovely lady called XXX, she works BIG, and I mean BIG….. we made friends and chatted a while. I always feel that time is my constraint to size of painting during my 100 day challenge… she convinced me that I just needed more ‘gusto’ and much bigger brushes….  for day 73 I am doing it large!

As preparation I’ve done a pen and ink drawing (DAY 71) two compositional colour studies (DAY 72) and today I’ve completed my intention of a large painting of the same image…… After 7 hours slog in the studio, I’m delighted with the end result, and rather exhausted and cross eyed.

pen drawing day 71

Usually, I don’t put this much effort into preparatory work (…WHAT???? I hear my students gasp… “But you make us do it!”….)  What I have found is that by the time I drew up my final piece, I had an established image in my head to work to, rather than the ‘suck it and see’ method which I lazily often rely on. I’m sure that this extra effort has made a better painting and I shall endeavour to keep up to this for my larger pieces.

I’m having a day off painting tomorrow to go to The Great Yorkshire Show and collect some more reference photographs for painting. I’m so hoping it’s a sunny day as I now have the need for blue shadows on grey horses……. it’s a must!!

 Acrylic on Dalerboard
£55 plus £5 p&p
May 16th, 2011

This is taken again from reference photographs I took at Aldam Park Horse Fair in Barnsley. I love the mare and foal peeping over the solid, broad back of the grey mare…… I’ve enjoyed heightening the colours and capturing the brief glints in their eyes as the buzz and hussle of the fair goes on around them.
I love painting coloured cobs with their full manes and contrasting coat colours…

I’m back in my favourite media of acrylic on dalerboard…..
